What is Acupuncture’s Role in Pain Management

Acupuncture is applicable for many aspects of pain management including:

  • Early intervention for acute injury and early onset of chronic issues.
  • Direct treatment of long-term pain due to chronic injury, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, drug side effects, arthritis, gout and autoimmune disorders.
  • Recovery-based treatments shorten overall healing times by strengthening support tissue and improving blood flow for post-surgical patients.

Acupuncture is one of the most frequently used alternative medicine modalities in the world. In 2019 the United States of America passed legislation ensuring access to acupuncture for military members and military dependents. In Canada Acupuncture is a regulated profession in Alberta, B.C., Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland. Residents of B.C. under the provincial MSP (Medical Service Plan) are eligible for provincial contributions towards acupuncture if they meet the following criteria:

  • MSP Premium Assistance Recipients;
  • Income Assistance recipients;
  • Convention refugees;
  • Inmates of B.C. Correctional Facilities;
  • Individuals enrolled with MSP through the At Home Program;
  • Residents of long-term care facilities receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS);
  • Individuals enrolled with MSP as Mental Health Clients; and
  • First Nations individuals with valid B.C. Medical Plan coverage through the First Nations Health Authority.

Having its origins dating back over 2500 years in China, the art of Acupuncture is most famous for its ability to address pain syndromes.  Health specialists at the University of York in the U.K. recently conducted a study involving approximately 18,000 patients diagnosed with chronic pain of the head, low back, neck and knees.  It was found that acupuncture treatment can boost the effectiveness of standard medical care, lessening the severity of chronic pain and depression.

Lead by the University of Calgary, we are providing free acupuncture support for Albertans over the age of 55 or under the age of 24 regarding Mental Wellness, Addiction Recovery, and Pain Management.
