The Benefits of Acupuncture for Addiction

Young people aged 15-24 have the highest risk of substance use or dependence.  Addiction is a state of mind which therefore assumes that it is not limited to substance dependency. Addictions to exercise, money, work and more can be just as debilitating to mental health and quality of life.

Conventional addiction treatments involve 3 stages: detoxification, rehabilitation, and relapse prevention.  The therapeutic goals of detoxification, rehabilitation, and relapse prevention, are to counteract withdrawal and return the individual to a neutral purposeful state. Medications, counselling, and advice, are a few examples of therapies used during all 3 stages of treatment.  Although standard procedures and practices have been developed to treat addictions, not all of these treatment strategies lead to successful recovery and sobriety.  As each individual is unique as their addiction so is discovering their recovery process.  Many individuals may not benefit from the conservative treatment options and may seek a more holistic and spiritual approach.

Acupuncture is a natural and valuable complement to any addiction recovery program. Practices are sourced from ancient philosophies of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine addresses the health of each individual by focusing on the mind and all body systems to restore energetic balance. Acupuncture stimulates the brain for natural healing as well as relaxation. When initiating the body to be in a more peaceful state, the brain and body naturally communicate to regulate mental and physical function. Acupuncture treatments are also custom to every patient as each diagnosis pattern and treatment approach is significant to each individual.

Research has proven that the use of acupuncture can benefit addiction treatment protocols through any stage of recovery as well as any symptoms varying from pain, mental health, withdrawal, and sleep improvement. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine practices encourage a healthy lifestyle and a positive mindset.
