Bell’s Palsy

Bell’s Palsy Treatment

There are limited treatments available on the Western medicine side, and wait and see is a common recommendation, although there are no statistics found about the self-recovery rate. Sadly, some Bell’s Palsy patients will never fully recover, and likely acupuncture has never been introduced to them.

Most researchers believe Bell’s palsy may be a virus that causes inflammation and swelling on the facial nerve. The disorder, which is not related to stroke in conventional medicine, is the most common cause of facial paralysis.

The disorder weakens the muscles which control the face and thus affects; facial expressions, drooping of eyebrow and corner of the mouth, drooling, involuntary facial twitches, and smoothing of the forehead. In some cases, the person affected by this condition simply loses control and all sensation in one half of their face.

Bell’s Palsy

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Bell’s Palsy is in the category of “Zhong Feng”, which translates to “Wind Attack.” This is the same category Stroke belongs to. Bell’s Palsy is one of the most commonly seen phenomena in the acupuncture department in hospitals in China.

The goal of acupuncture treatment is to expel the Wind-Cold from the meridians, improve the circulation of Qi and Blood to nourish the muscles, and restore nerve and muscle function. As muscle contraction improves, the treatment also aims to enhance the body’s defences strengthening the individuals’ immune system.
